Key objectives
- Maximising storage capacity for full pallets and cartons
- Increasing picking throughput to fulfil customer orders
- Ensuring continuous replenishment of the picking stations
- Managing ambient, chilled and frozen products within a single logistics hub
- Reducing operator travel distances and physical effort
Technical constraints and requirements
- Clear height limited to 6,700 mm
- A large number of beverage and food SKUs with different storage requirements
- Manual picking of both full pallets and individual cartons
- Cold rooms for chilled products at 0/+4 °C and frozen products at −20 °C
- Cold chain continuity across every handling stage
Our solution
Distinctive features
1. Manual picking across multiple station types
- Picking is carried out by operators riding custom tugger trains. Using the same vehicle, they reach four types of picking station:
- conventional pallet racking;
- gravity roller lanes for pallets;
- gravity roller lanes for cartons (carton flow);
- tray-based vertical lift modules.
Every SKU is placed in the station best suited to its format, all within a single picking cycle.
- Carton flow lanes can be assigned by item code or by customer order. In the first case, they act as the SKU’s fixed pick location. In the second, they hold the cartons for a single order, which the operator picks already consolidated.

2. Automated replenishment of the picking lines: Traslo Raider and miniload
- The two Traslo Raider systems are proprietary automation technology from the Modulblok Group, developed by its sister company Logaut. They are configured across three multi-depth levels, holding pallet reserve stock on the upper levels and replenishing the gravity roller lanes on the bottom level, where picking takes place. With just 6,700 mm of clear height, deep-lane storage recovers the capacity the building cannot offer vertically.
- The 12,000-carton miniload feeds the carton flow lanes using Arachne, the gripping system designed by Logaut. Arachne can handle cartons in multiples or one at a time: the miniload replenishes a lane with several cartons in a single cycle, or with the single carton the order calls for. SKUs are slotted according to ABC classification, storage environment and minimum sales quantity.

3. Load unit handling, picking aids and WMS supervision
- Stacker and reach-truck AGVs take care of replenishment, picking and handling of full load units. A supervisory WMS coordinates missions and routes across the entire logistics hub, from the ambient areas to the cold rooms.
- Picking aids support every stage of the operator’s work:
- colour-coded light guidance shows which stations to serve;
- put-to-light systems guide picking from the vertical lift modules;
- weight-balancing lift assists (minicranes) support full-pallet picking.
In the cold rooms, slow-moving SKUs are managed in dedicated vertical lift modules.

Benefits delivered
High density within 6,700 mm of clear height
The two Traslo Raider systems, arranged across three multi-depth levels, concentrate pallet reserve stock above the picking lines. Capacity grows without requiring any additional height.
Continuous replenishment of the picking stations
The Raiders feed the gravity pallet lanes, while the 12,000-carton miniload feeds the carton flow lanes with multiple or single-carton handling. Operators find the goods already in the pick position.
Guided, ergonomic picking
Picking on board the tugger trains, colour-coded light guidance, put-to-light and order-dedicated lanes cut travel and errors. Minicranes ease the effort of full-pallet picking.
Safe multi-temperature management
The hub combines over 3,000 ambient pallet positions with approximately 2,400 in chilled and frozen cold rooms, all under a single WMS. Muting barriers and automatic system shutdown in the event of unauthorised access protect the automated areas.

Warehouse Engineering is the Modulblok magazine dedicated to the industrial culture of contemporary intralogistics — an editorial space created to read and interpret the changes reshaping warehouse systems. Through technical content, scenario analysis and expert contributions, the magazine explores the technologies, operating models and skills that are redefining the role of logistics within industrial and distribution processes. Its aim is to offer a structured perspective, one that connects technological evolution with system design.
