Assessing supply chain sustainability: how Modulblok creates value through its supply chain

In recent years, sustainability has become one of the most important drivers of industrial competitiveness. For a company like Modulblok, operating at the intersection of intralogistics and manufacturing, sustainability is not a communication exercise but a fundamental factor in long-term growth, reliability, and market positioning. Within this context, Modulblok launched an advanced assessment of its supply chain sustainability as early as 2025, adopting a scientifically grounded approach aligned with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles and consistent with the latest developments in the European regulatory landscape.

The objective: transforming the supply chain into a strategic asset

Although the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will progressively extend mandatory sustainability reporting requirements to a growing number of companies from 2026–2027 onwards, Modulblok chose to take a proactive approach by launching its ESG assessment journey ahead of regulatory deadlines. The company’s goal is to publish its first Sustainability Report in 2027, in accordance with the VSME standard.

The initiative was not designed to introduce rigid supplier qualification mechanisms. Its purpose is broader and more strategic: to develop an objective understanding of the impacts and risks embedded within the supply chain and integrate this knowledge into the company’s industrial governance framework.

The main objectives were to:

  • identify where the most significant environmental and social impacts occur throughout the product life cycle;
  • assess the company’s exposure to environmental, social, and reputational risks;
  • provide Modulblok with a robust decision-making framework to guide future sourcing and procurement strategies.

In essence, the aim is to make sustainability a strategic driver of industrial growth and long-term value creation.

The methodology: scientific rigour and a proportionate approach

The assessment was developed according to the principle of double materiality, considering both:

  • inside-out impacts: the effects of Modulblok’s activities on the environment and society;
  • outside-in impacts: external ESG factors that may influence the company’s risks, costs, operational continuity, and reputation.

The methodological framework was designed in alignment with both the CSRD and the VSME standard for SMEs, ensuring a high level of analytical robustness while remaining proportionate to the size and complexity of the organisation.

The main tools employed included:

  • a structured analysis of internal procurement data;
  • a proprietary ESG questionnaire, inspired by the ESRS standards and administered to suppliers through a digital platform;
  • the integration of public sources and official databases;
  • the use of sector-specific proxies and benchmarking methodologies to ensure comparability and statistical reliability of the results.

This approach made it possible to combine scientific rigour with practical applicability, generating insights that are both robust and relevant for decision-making.

To connect ESG assessment with real industrial processes, Modulblok complemented its analysis of procurement data with a simplified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) mapping approach. This enabled the company to identify six key stages across its value chain: Raw material sourcing, Steel processing and manufacturing, Surface treatment processes, Assembly and internal logistics, Packaging and distribution
Product use and end-of-life management, This life cycle perspective provides a more comprehensive understanding of where environmental and social impacts are generated, helping to link sustainability performance directly to the activities that create value throughout the supply chain.

The results: examples of excellence across the Modulblok supply chain

The assessment highlighted a number of supply chain partners demonstrating particularly strong ESG performance, confirming the quality, reliability, and maturity of the industrial ecosystem that supports Modulblok’s operations.
The findings provide clear evidence that many suppliers have already integrated sustainability principles into their business practices, adopting structured approaches to environmental management, workplace safety, governance, and responsible business conduct. This reinforces the importance of collaboration throughout the value chain and demonstrates how sustainability can become a shared driver of long-term value creation..

Supply chain excellence

The assessment identified several examples of best practice across the supply chain, including:

  • Steel industry operators with high levels of recycled material content, internationally recognised sustainability certifications, and transparent governance frameworks.
  • Suppliers of tools and technical materials with structured ESG reporting systems, environmental and safety certifications, and significant shares of energy sourced from renewable resources.
  • Companies specialising in surface treatment processes that operate certified quality, environmental, and occupational safety management systems, supported by tangible emissions reduction programmes.

These examples demonstrate how a supply chain selected according to rigorous industrial criteria can become a powerful driver of value creation—not only in terms of quality and reliability, but also from a sustainability perspective.

Looking ahead: shaping the supply chain of the future

The journey undertaken so far represents only the first step towards an ESG governance model that is increasingly integrated into the company’s overall strategy.

Key areas of future development include:

  • the progressive integration of ESG criteria into procurement and sourcing processes;
  • targeted supplier engagement programmes designed to encourage continuous improvement;
  • enhanced ESG traceability throughout the value chain, including indirect suppliers;
  • the further development and refinement of the Supply Chain ESG Policy;
  • full alignment with the requirements of CSRD sustainability reporting.

More than a compliance initiative, this approach represents a structural lever for long-term growth—strengthening resilience, improving decision-making, and supporting Modulblok’s ability to create sustainable value across its entire industrial ecosystem.
